Diabetes can cause two conditions that can lead to unhealthy feet. Neuropathy is nerve damage of the foot causing numbness and loss of sensation. This loss of sensation makes it difficult for the patient to distinguish between hot and cold or to realize that the foot has been cut or bruised. Ulcers, cuts, scrapes, burns and other trauma to the foot can go unnoticed until it is too late to avoid serious problems, such as infection or gangrene.

Diabetes is also linked to atherosclerosis or "hardening of the arteries" that can slow down the circulation in the legs.

In addition, the high blood sugar levels of diabetes hamper the work of white blood cells which fight infection in the body. This can compound any foot problems because the body’s defenses may be unable to prevent the development of cellulitis (infection of the skin), abscesses (infection of the soft tissue under the skin), or osteomyelitis (infection in the bones). This can result in foot ulcers that won't heal, gangrene and even amputations.
